Upsells On your Shopify Store
Upsell opportunities on your online Shopify store can boost your sales and lead to a better customer experience. Upselling is a good way to increase average order value.
It can also improve customer experience on your Shopify store by making related products easier to find. If you did it right, upselling make recommendations to your customers about all or related products that they would or should have bought anyway. This ensures that your customers don’t have to make a separate order for such items on your store because they were not fully aware, or search for these products on other e-commerce websites.
Upsell & Cross-sell on your Shopify Store
Upselling and cross-selling when done right, can be an integral part of your online marketing strategy through Shopify apps. But then again, let’s first discuss the difference between upselling and cross-selling.
Upselling is recommending a better version of your product or services to your customers (also showing the additional cost or price) for that version. For example, if you sell SD Cards, recommending that a customer can purchase a higher GB capacity card of the same line of SD cards would be upselling.
Cross-selling is recommending related or complementary products to your customers. For example, if you sell SD Cards, recommending cellphone accessories or cases to the customer would be considered cross-selling.
Both upselling and cross-selling are considered opportunities in your store to help you boost sales and customer experience. It can have the opposite effect when done poorly, so be extra careful. Here are some things to keep in mind as you develop your upselling and cross-selling technique:
- Product recommendations can be a good avenue to tell your customers about a newly launched product that can benefit their purchase. Your customers may not know that you have new products in your store, and newcomers may not be familiar with the full list of products on your online Shopify store.
- When recommending a product, it should fall within common use cases. For example, if you sell affordable SD cards geared towards customers purchasing their first entry level smartphone, recommending expensive cases or covers for cell phones would probably not lead to more sales, and may end up causing confusion for your customers.
- A good technique is to display recommendations that are priced less than your users’ selected products, that is, recommendations that do not increase the cost or value by too much. For example, your customer is unlikely to purchase recommendations if he or she is purchasing something for $30, and you recommend related products that cost close to $100. This also makes it look like you’re doing it wrong because your pushing sales too much. Be careful, this can lead to a bad customer experience.
When designing your marketing strategy, think about what customers would most likely buy. This may seem like a daunting task, but hey, it can yield to huge or positive results. If it still seems like a lot of work, then don’t fret because Shopify has a number of apps that can automate product upsells.
